Unfortunately in my opinion some  members of the pork industry are slow to consider the well being of the pigs they raise prefering to use  intensive indoor farming methods. This involves the use of sow stalls and farrowing crates.  A sow stall is a metal barred crate that houses a single sow during her 16 week pregnancy. The floor of the stall is concrete with a drainage system to remove waste . The stall has just enough room  for the sow to stand up in, she cannot turn around and can only take a short step forward or back. Producers use this method for a number of reasons but primarily because it allows an increase in their profit margins by letting them reduce costs while maximising out put. Continue reading
